Do you love to thrift but get overwhelmed when you think about thrifting with your kids? As a mom of four who has thrifted with kids for nine years, I have a few tricks up my sleeve. Here are some tips on how to go thrift store shopping with your kids.
Simple Tips
- Understand that you need to be flexible when you are shopping at your local thrift store. There will be times when you are in the middle of the store and your toddler (who is potty training) needs to get to the restroom asap.
- Before you leave the car, make sure your expectations are clear. For example, instruct each of your kids on whether they will be sitting in the cart or holding onto the side of the cart. Let the kids know what the consequence will be if they leave their post. For example, after three warnings, they may not be able to pick out a toy at the end of the shopping trip.
- Do not visit the toy aisle first! The toy aisle is a reward at the end of the shopping trip. That way if your kids get impatient or they do not want to listen, you can gently remind them that “mommy is going to shop for her things first, then if you listen and obey, I will take you to the toy isle at the end of the trip.” It may be hard at first, and of course, not every time is going to be “perfect”, but your kids will start to catch on. They will learn that if they are patient and obey by following your instructions, they will be rewarded in the end. This is important to start implementing at a young age. As they grow, it will get easier and more enjoyable to shop together.
- Use a reward system for your younger kids and a budget for your older kids. Maybe they do chores at home the week before to earn some spending money. Thrift shops are a great opportunity to teach your kids the value of their own money by showing them how to stretch their dollar by finding a good deal.
- It’s also a good idea to set a budget for your younger kids. For example, before you leave the car, you can tell them that they each have $3 to spend. If they want a big toy that is $8, you can remind them that although they aren’t able to buy the $8 toy, they can buy a $3 toy.
- And always the favorite, pack lots of snacks. I think a special treat like a small lollipop works great because it usually takes a long time to eat. Here’s a fun tip, some banks still give out lollipops in the drive thru.
- Make it a fun outing. Hit up a park before you go to the thrift store so your kids can get all their wiggles out.
Hopefully these practical tips will help you and your kids enjoy thrifting together!

I love thrifting but feel I’ve always avoided it unless I’m by myself because my kids have wiggles. I’m going to go to a thrift store now and apply these tips! Thank you!
