Snow is in the air and with the winter months ahead it is the perfect time to evaluate your wardrobe. Start by looking in your closet and think about creating your own capsule wardrobe.
One thing I love about capsule wardrobes is it allows you to simplify, hone in on your personal style, and create different outfits with fewer pieces…meaning less stress when getting dressed!
In this post, I will give you shoppable links and style inspiration for your own winter capsule wardrobe.
This blog post contains affiliate links, and I will receive a small commission if purchased. Thank you for your support as I continue to create quality content.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe looks different for everyone. The main goal is pairing down your closet is to create a wardrobe that not only is simplified, but contains clothes that you love and can easily be mixed-and-matched.
Things to keep in mind
- Keep it classy, not trendy (no fast fashion).
- Choose functional pieces.
- Choose pieces that flatter your body shape.
- Choose a complimentary color palette and include base colors to build off of. I personally like neutral colors.
As a stay-at-home mom, I like to keep it simple. I really like clothes and I enjoy a variety of cozy home clothes and classic pieces that can elevate my look when I am out-and-about. It’s important to have a few staple and versatile pieces when it comes to winter style. A quality coat and boots are a must for the cold temps of the winter season.
Although I created shoppable links, I am an avid thrifter and second hand shopper. Yes, I do believe there is a time and a place to purchase new items, but if you are not in a hurry, second hand shopping can save you some money. When I shop for undergarments through the Tommy John website, I just wait for sale and then stock up. If you have your eye on a specific winter jacket that may be over your budget, check out Poshmark, you might find exactly what you’ve been looking for.
Here is the ultimate winter capsule wardrobe checklist
Here is the ultimate winter capsule wardrobe checklist along with shoppable links. Many of these items are my current favorite brands or brands that are tried and true.
Undergarments – Tommy John is my current favorite underwear and bra brand! Read my full review here. I also really enjoy the sock brand Darn Tough.
Denim – Think about a great pair of blue jeans flattering for your body type. Whether it’s a high waist flare jean, straight leg, or skinny, choose what you will feel comfortable wearing on a daily bases. It’s also good to have a casual pair and a dressy pair of jeans.
Interested in the history of blue jeans? I enjoy fashion history and wanted to learn about where blue jeans originated from. Read what I learned here.
Tops – Choose layers for the colder months such as long sleeves, pullovers, sweaters, and cardigans and/or dusters.
Sets – I’m including a matching set in the capsule wardrobe list because I think having a cute and comfortable outfit for home makes a difference. A matching set can help make you feel put together and comfortable at the same time.
Shoes – Winter boots, booties, and clogs.
Accessories – Jewelry and purse or bag. My current favorite bag is a neoprene Dagne Dover backpack. Check out my full review here.
Outerwear – Winter coat, scarfs, gloves, hats.

Things to remember
Remember, creating a winter capsule wardrobe is not to deprive you of your love for style, but the purpose is to help simplify your life and enjoy the clothes you do have.
Go through your current wardrobe, choose pieces that will fit into a capsule wardrobe and shop for a few new pieces to add into your everyday wear. If you are not ready to get rid of some pieces, pack them away for now.
For the pieces you do want to let go of, donate, consign, or sell on Poshmark. For a beginners guide to Poshmark, get my ebook here.
